そもそも、言葉としての「日本画」は明治20年代につくられました。
「日本画」とは、西洋画が入ってきた時に、日本人の描く西洋風絵画（洋画）に対置されることにより意味を持った歴史用語です。
そして明治以降、次々と押し寄せる西洋文化の波と日本の伝統絵画をどうやって融合させるかが、現代日本画家の課題でもありました。

他の絵画との違い
油絵との大きな違いは、単純に材料の違いがあります。
水と油、その素材の違いが制作に多少なりとも影響があるのは、わたしは否定できません。
また、東洋の空間意識、日本の空間意識、西洋の空間意識はそれぞれに異なるものだと、私は思います。
日本の絵画には、すべてを描き切ってしまわない「余韻」が重視されるように思います。
「抜け」がある。わかりやすくいうと、中国の水墨画には空間はありますが、「抜け」はありません。
中国から伝来してきた絵画様式なのに、こう行った違いが出るのは、やはり日本独特の美意識に基づくものでしょう。

日本の精神性
また、東洋は自然を崇拝する意識が高く、アニミズムが自然と浸透しています。
逆に西洋は「人間崇拝」のキリスト教が浸透しているので、その宗教感からくる美意識には、無意識的な違いがあると、私は思います。
つまり、油絵と日本画が、材料だけの違いと、言い切ってしまうには、まだまだ早く、解決しなければいけない問題が、根底にあるように、今、私は思います。
逆に西洋は「人間崇拝」のキリスト教が浸透しているので、その宗教感からくる美意識には、無意識的な違いがあると、私は思います。
つまり、油絵と日本画が、材料だけの違いと、言い切ってしまうには、まだまだ早く、解決しなければいけない問題が、根底にあるように、今、私は思います。

ただ、私は私が20世紀に生まれ、21世紀を見る事ができた、一人の日本人であり、一人の女であることを胸に秘めて、制作をしていきたいと、常々、思っています。
